Qin Shi-huang – The First Emperor of China

Hello China Tour Dreamers,

Understanding China’s deep history and culture can really enhance your tour experience. I always go into cultural and historical detail in my pre-tour talks with clients and everyone loves it so much I thought I would devote a new category to it in my blog. I hope you enjoy!

One of the most important people in Chinese history is probably one of the least known in the Western world. Most people know that the Great Wall is one of the seven ancient wonders. But most people may not know that the one who conceived and created that wonder was also the first Emperor of China’s feudal society.

His name was Qin Shi-huang and he had a remarkable reign.

Qin Shi-huang was born in 259 B.C. and became King of the state of Qin at the age of 13. One by one, he conquered the six kingdoms and unified China into one country. In 221 B.C. he established the Qin Dynasty, the first centralized and unified regime in the Chinese history. He then proceeded to standardize the language, currency and measurement systems. His contributions to China would forever shape its destiny.

Despite his great contributions however, Qin Shi-huang was a also despot – conceited, cruel, unforgiving, and with a mercurial temperament. He ruthlessly executed anyone he thought who was against him. Even his grand projects, like his tomb: Terra Cotta Warrior Army and the Great Wall were built on the suffering of the people. His merits and demerits have brought him both praise and blame down through the ages. He has been honored as a remarkable emperor and denounced as a tyrant. In many ways though, he was a product of his times. Even though the Qin dynasty only lasted 15 years, he totally changed the history of China. Although there have been many dynasties in the 2,000 years after him, they all inherited and embraced the system he created.

One of Qin Shi-huang’s greatest legacies is the Great Wall, which runs through most of the northern China, from the Gobi Desert in the west, to the East China Sea. The wall was originally intended as protection against the northern frontier enemies. After thousands of years of decay, expansion and rebuilding the wall has become the symbol of the indomitable Chinese spirit. The most popular visited section of the Wall is about 500 years old and is in Beijing. The oldest part of the Wall is in the far west out in the middle of the desert and is over 2000 years old. Those ruins lay in sand, and other than a few inches showing above the sand, you can barely tell there used to be the grand history of the Wall!

Another of his monuments is his grand tomb, which took 37 years to build, and is protected by an Army of 8,000 life-sized Terra Cotta Warriors. Each warrior has his own unique features, pose, hair-style and facial expression. You will never find two warriors the same. All of them look so vivid and well prepared for battle. Still facing east against the six conquered kingdoms in their battle formation, eternally vigilant and awaiting the command of their emperor. Can you imagine, this miracle of archeology was found by a farmer when he was digging water well in 1974? That is why there is a saying in China: if you want to be millionaire over night, dig a hole in Xi’an. Because Xi’an was capital for over 13 dynasties, spanning more than 2,000 years, and there are 73 emperors buried there.

The most mysterious of Qin Shi-huang’s legacies is his tomb, which is still to be uncovered. According to the history books, his tomb is built under the water table, reinforced with bronze as waterproofing. And the size of his tomb is gigantic, and follows the layout of his capital Xianyang. It is a miniature of his world when he lived. There are gemstones as stars, in perfect celestial formation. Flowing rivers of mercury depict the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers. There are even mountains and canyons, everything in their accurate geographic locations! Can you imagine the excitement when his tomb is finally opened to the world?

This small episode of China’s history is just a great example to dignify the unique style of Chinese culture. China has had some wonderful, dramatic dynasties and great emperors, like Qin shi-huang and his Qin Dynasty. Like Royal European countries, China had a nobility hierarchy, and a rigid etiquette to maintain and demonstrate this historical culture. The signs of this special synergy are everywhere, from the philosophy to the architecture, from the system of the whole society to people’s daily mannerism, and every corner of city is telling you the history!

Impressions of Sanjie Liu Show – A Spectacular Visual Feast!

Hello China Tour Dreamers,

The Impressions of Liu Sanjie is a sensational night show performed in the largest natural theater in the world. It is a double delight in that the show itself is visually stunning, and the natural theater is so integrated into the natural scenery that it is a living, breathing part of the performance. You will see anything like it anywhere else!

The theater is a totally unique venue, with the waters of the Li River as its stage, and twelve mist shrouded hills and the sky act as backdrop. Mist, rain, moonlight, and the seasons ensure that every show will be unique. The auditorium is housed on the natural islands of the river with the audience seated on the artistically designed terraces, surrounded by green plants.

The Impressions of Liu Sanjie is a large-scaled show with 600 plus actors and actress involved. The show lasts approximately 70 minutes based on the classical Sanjie Liu folk songs. Sanjie Liu is a legendary figure in the Zhuang minority folklore. Her name literally translates as third daughter of Liu. Liu Sanjie was said to be extraordinarily bright as a child who was capable of singing about every object she pointed at. Due to her ability to compose and sing elegant and touching songs independently, Liu Sanjie was dubbed as “Song Fairy”.

The Zhuang people are the largest minority, second only in size to the majority Han people.

The Impressions of Sanjie Liu is a must-see on your visit to Guilin and Yangshuo. Yangshuo is just downriver from Guilin and we always recommend an overnight stay in Yangshuo when visiting Guilin.

Enjoy the show! :-)

All the Best,

Jia

2010 World Expo Shanghai – Plan Your Dream Trip Now!

Hi China Tour Dreamers,

Better start making your plans now for the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai. You can be sure it will be a once in lifetime event. Remember how China presented the Olympics! It will be a fabulous extravaganza! They are projecting participation from 200 countries and 70 million visitors! You can check out this cool slideshow on the Expo. Make sure your speakers or headphones are on, the music is a beautiful traditional Chinese folks song.

You can get an idea of the grand scale China is planning from the 2010 Shanghai World Expo’s official website: World Expositions are galleries of human inspirations and thoughts. Since 1851 when the Great Exhibition of Industries of All Nations was held in London, the World Expositions have attained increasing prominence as grand events for economic, scientific, technological and cultural exchanges, serving as an important platform for displaying historical experience, exchanging innovative ideas, demonstrating esprit de corps and looking to the future.

With a long civilisation, China favours international exchange and loves world peace. China owes its successful bid for the World Exposition in 2010 to the international community’s support for and confidence in its reform and opening-up. The Exposition will be the first registered World Exposition in a developing country, which gives expression to the expectations the world’s people place on China’s future development.

So what will Expo 2010 Shanghai China deliver to the world? There is no doubt the Chinese people will present to the world a successful, splendid and unforgettable exposition.

Expo 2010 Shanghai China will be a great event to explore the full potential of urban life in the 21st century and a significant period in urban evolution. Fifty-five percent of the world population is expected to live in cities by the year 2010. The prospect of future urban life, a subject of global interest, concerns all nations, developed or less developed, and their people. Being the first World Exposition on the theme of city, Exposition 2010 will attract governments and people from across the world, focusing on the theme “Better City, Better Life.” For its 184 days, participants will display urban civilisation to the full extent, exchange their experiences of urban development, disseminate advanced notions on cities and explore new approaches to human habitat, lifestyle and working conditions in the new century. They will learn how to create an eco-friendly society and maintain the sustainable development of human beings.

Expo 2010 Shanghai China will centre on innovation and interaction. Innovation is the soul, while cultural interaction is an important mission of the World Expositions. In the new era, Expo 2010 Shanghai China will contribute to human-centred development, scientific and technological innovation, cultural diversity and win-win cooperation for a better future, thus composing a melody with the key notes of highlighting innovation and interaction in the new century.

Expo 2010 Shanghai China will also be a grand international gathering. On the one hand, we shall endeavour to attract about 200 nations and international organisations to take part in the exhibition as well as 70 million visitors from home and abroad, ensuring the widest possible participation in the history of the World Expositions. On the other hand, we will put Expo 2010 Shanghai China in a global perspective and do our best to encourage the participation and gain the understanding and support of various countries and peoples, in order to turn Expo 2010 Shanghai China into a happy reunion of people from all over the world.

In addition, Expo 2010 Shanghai China will offer a wonderful opportunity for cross-culture dialogues. Before the conclusion of the Exposition, a “Shanghai Declaration” will be issued. This declaration, hopefully a milestone in the history of the World Expositions, will epitomise the insights to be offered by the participants and embody people’s ideas for future cooperation and development and extensive common aspirations, thereby leaving a rich spiritual legacy of urban development to people throughout the world.

The Chinese Government will go to great lengths to make Expo 2010 Shanghai China a special event that carries on traditions and opens a new vista into the future. Our motto is: “Keeping in mind the next 60 years’ development while preparing for the six months’ Exposition.” We count on the continuing attention, support and participation of all the peace-loving countries.

The 2010 World Expo runs from May 1st – October 31st, 2010. Just let me know if you are interested and I will be happy to help you plan your dream tour!

All the Best!

Sichuan Opera Show in Chengdu, China – Shadow Puppets

Sichuan Opera Show in Chengdu, China – Shadow Puppets

Hi Gang!

This guy is amazing! This Sichuan Opera company performs in Chengdu, which is the capital of Sichaun Province in China (home of very spicy food and Giant Pandas!).

This show is a must-see when you are in China and a bit hit with my clients. Sichuan Opera is famous as the face-changing opera. Their faces change in the blink of an eye! This show is authentic (not tourist kitsch) and you will see as many local Chinese there enjoying the show and their tea as you will tourists.

I will be posting some more video soon, including the face-changing (way cool!).

Did You Know That Shanghai Saved Thousands from The Holocaust?

Hello China Tour Dreamers!

A fascinating yet little known fact is that Shanghai was a sanctuary for Jewish refugees fleeing the persecution of Hitler’s Germany. In fact Shanghai was the only place in the world that would take them in unconditionally. That is because Shanghai was the only place in the world that did not require a travel permit to enter!

Over 24,000 Jews found safe harbor in Shanghai from 1938 to the end of the war, many of them notable figures. Some of the notables that eventually came to the U.S. are Peter Max (famous artist), W. Michael Blumenthal and U.S. Treasury Secretary during the Carter administration. You can find more names and even more fascinating details on the web, including the Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanghai_Ghetto

I just wanted to share this piece of modern Chinese history with you. Most people understandably get lost in the rich and glorious 5,000 year history of China’s past, and it is easy to overlook the more recent chapters. :-)

Of course if you would like to include this remarkable piece of history in your tour of Shanghai we would be happy to arrange for you to see the neighborhood where they lived as well as some of the still standing sites.

Happy planning!

A Very Charming and Quaint Hotel in Beijing

Hello China Tour Dreamers!

People go to China to experience something very Chinese, not something they can get anywhere else or at home. Who doesn’t? That’s normally what I think when giving suggestions and choosing places to stay or visit.

Without exception, every one of my clients who have stayed there all love Bamboo Garden Hotel in Beijing. First it’s a very traditional courtyard complex with beautiful Chinese garden style. Second it’s located right in the heart of old town Beijing, the Hutong area> The Hutong area is the only place where you will find the old Beijing atmosphere to immerse in while you are enjoying all the fascinating history and culture of Beijing during your day tours.

Many of my clients love this peaceful and charming hotel so much that they called this their highlight of the tour! The Bamboo Garden Hotel is a classical Chinese courtyard-style structure in a quiet lane west of the Drum Tower in Beijing. The halls and pavilions in the building are linked by unique, long corridors, with a tranquil and elegant surrounding of bamboo groves, rockeries, and fountains.

There is a very interesting history behind this hotel. It was the private residence of Sheng Xuanhuai, the postal department minister during the late Qing Dynasty, and it was also said to be the garden of Andehai, the imperial eunuch. Since the late Qing Dynasty, a succession of celebrities such as Wang Yintai, Mahansan, Dong Biwu and Kangsheng (famous people from different political periods) have lived here.

Have a sip of tea while you are emailing your friends from your elegant Chinese room (free wireless in each room) and tell them how much you are enjoying the real Beijing!

You can check out their website and see some pictures of the interior: http://www.bbgh.com.cn/index.html

You can also check out what some of our clients had to say about the hotel on our Testimonials page: http://www.jiasdreamtours.com/testimonial.html

A Special Melody at the Potala Palace – Tibetan Women Singing

A Special Melody at the Potala Palace – Tibetan Women Singing

I took this video at the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. There were a group of women working on the roof and they were singing and working rhythmically to the song they were singing. It was really a special moment in a very special place. Tibet is truly a spiritual, mystical place. All of my clients that visited Tibet on their China tour agree that it is an experience like no other they have ever felt.

Go to Tibet! Of course I will be happy to help plan your trip to Tibet! :-) http://www.jiasdreamtours.com/index.html

Autumn Splendor and Great Prices

Hi Folks,

Autumn is a great time to visit China. And with the airfares dropping, this autumn could be the best value in a long time. I did a quick, random search on Kayak.com from San Francisco and found fares as low as $773. With some search engine diligence and a little flexibility you can probably do even better than that.

Hotel rates have been coming down as well as capacity projections are not materializing. The one-two punch of the economic crisis and the swine flu have been hammering tourism and business travel in every part of the world.

The temperatures are pleasant and it is a perfect time to see the wonders of China and maybe even experience an unforgettable cruise on the Yangtze.

If China is on your must-see before you die list (and it should be!), then you should seriously consider going this Fall. This could well be the best opportunity in years!

Cheers!

Time to Start Planning Your Dream Trip to China!

Enjoyed watching the Olympics in Beijing? Time to experience China for yourselves! Spring and Autumn are the best times to go from the weather perspective, but you will enjoy China whatever time you go.

The first step in planning your trip is deciding where to go in China. The answer to that is very simple… it depends! :-) Sorry, had to say that.

Seriously though, it does depend on a couple of questions: the time your have to spend in China and your interests (historical, natural wonders, cultural, all of the above, etc.)

The main must-visit places in China are Beijing, Xi’an and Guilin. Why?

Beijing – the capital and heart of China. Home of the fabulous Ming Dynasty legacies such as the Forbidden City, Summer Palace and Temple of Heaven. And of course the fabled Great Wall. Not to mention some of the modern marvels such as Tian’anmen Square, and the ultra-new icons The Water Cube, Bird’s Nest and other Olympic venues. If you want to read more on Beijing click here.

Xi’an – Xi’an is the cradle of Chinese civilization. Located in the very center of the Middle Kingdom (the literal translation of China), Xi’an served as the ancient capital of China for 11 dynasties from the 11th century B.C. to the early 10th century A.D. and was the first capital of a unified China. Xi’an is over 2000 years old, with 73 emperors buried here. As the starting point of the famous ancient “Silk Road” that linked China with central Asia and the Roman Empire, Xi’an was the key place for China to open the door to the outside world! From as early as the Second Century B.C. Want to read more on Xi’an? Click here.

Guilin – the most beautiful city in China! The scenery of Guilin has inspired thousands of Chinese artists over the ages to draw such beautiful paintings! Guilin is the very essence of the classical Chinese landscape paintings; fantastically shaped peaks that are studded with pines and delicate pavilions, partly shrouded in the mist. You will get easily get lost at this peaceful land of Shangri-La! More on Guilin can be found here.

Of course I have not even mentioned Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, or a dozen other wonderful places to see. It all depends of course on how much time you have.

If you want to know more just ask! That is the whole purpose of this Blog. Let me know how long you are thinking of spending in China and I will be happy to give you suggestions.

Happy Journeys!
